An outstanding independent retail grocery business was that of Jack
Cherry, a fancy grocer. Established in 1919, this business each year
claimed its part of the business and steadily forged ahead. Three
floors of the store were used for display and storage. The largest
retail produce business in eastern Carolina was a part of the Cherry
enterprise. An excellent refrigeration system was a part of the
equipment.
