One residence of the most influential and prominent member of the
Bonner family was located on the bank of the Pamlico River, facing
it on what is now Water Street. This was the home of Colonel James
Bonner. Later this house passed out of the possession of the Bonner
family and was occupied as a tavern and known as the "old Mulberry
Tavern. The Mulberry Tavern is said to be the first home built in
the Original Washington. It took its name from the double row of
Otaheite mulberry trees standing on each side of the walk leading
from the gate to the entrance. According to Mrs. Rodman Myers,
daughter of Edward Jenner Warren, the building was burned down after
the War Between the States when a warehouse next door was destroyed
by fire. |
