This photo was taken
in the early 1920s. One of Washington's newest manufacturing
enterprises was that of Rumley Farm's Meat Products, whose plant and
farm scenes are show here. This was a locally-owned and operated
business that would reach into several surrounding counties. A large
cold storage plant was a part of the set-up. Much of the livestock
that was slaughtered was grown on the Rumley Farm nearby. Twenty men
were employed in the operation of this new business as well as the
running of the farm; this number would increase to a possible thirty
within a few months. In addition to selling fresh meats the company
preserved and cured. M. S. Cox and J. M. Saunders were the owners.
The attractive summer house pictured is Mr. Cox's summer home on the
Pamlico River. Soon the storage capacity will be trebled in the
plant.
