St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Mother of Mercy Mission |
These two 1952 photographs portray the St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Mother of Mercy Mission, both of Washington. At the last request to her husband, Mrs. Cogan, a dying New York woman, requested a small mission chapel be built. That chapel, a small brick structure on Market Street, was built and became known as St. Agnes Catholic Church. St. Agnes became a church and school combined. The Mother of Mercy Mission, a Catholic church for people of color, was built in 1927 and became a church as well as a school. A brief history of the Catholic churches in Washington can be found in these two articles. |
