One of Washington's oldest churches has a wonderful history, says minister

Washington's First Presbyterian Church observed its 175th anniversary on October 18, 1998. The church has a heritage rich with legend, tradition and history. It was built in 1823 and burned when Federal troops took possession of the town in 1824. On May 28, 1867, the corner stone was laid for a new church building. Eighty-five years later (1952), the Church embarked upon a plan for erecting a steeple and restoring the original beauty of the sanctuary. The First Presbyterian Church was restored in 1954. With the restoration of the Church, came a sanctuary more impressive than in all history and its steeple became a landmark. It is now the first identifiable building one sees on coming North across the Pamlico.
