Jerry and Connie Helms were forced to ride out Hurricane Hazel when their vehicles flooded on Long Beach. When the storm conditions subsided, thousands of North Carolinians were greeted with scenes of devastation and destruction. An estimated 1,000 people were killed and more than 16,000 buildings were badly damaged.
